South Africa’s Queen of Rock strips down to perform her Guilty Pleasures

Fresh off her sold out collaborative show with Zolani Mahola (Freshly ground), Karen Zoid embarks on a 5 show run at Theatre on the Bay in Cape Town with a production aptly entitled Under the Covers.

The show consists of unplugged versions of the songs we all secretly love, sing along to in the car and find ourselves humming in the shower! In Zoid’s own wordsall the songs I wish I had written myself, as well as a few guilty pleasures… from Lady Gaga to Queen, from Leonard Cohen to Snow Patrol, from the Beatles to Beethoven, from Miriam Makeba to Modern Talking.” In this exclusive run, theatergoers can expect highlights such as “Hallelujah”, “Paradise Road”, “Don’t Stop Believing”, “Imagine” and “Where Do Broken Hearts Go.”

Karen Zoid has become an important part of the SA music scene. Since releasing her first solo album 10 years ago, she has fired the imagination of both critics and the public to such an extent that she became a South African icon. What’s more, through the last decade, Zoid has managed that unusual and frequently tricky feat of balancing popular appeal with critical praise; of securing an audience of both Afrikaans and English speakers; of retaining her individuality in a market known for its desire for sameness. And through it all, Zoid has held on to an enviable integrity that allows her to speak her mind in a way that only earns her more devotees and proved no barrier to being named Best Female Artist at the 2008 South African Music Awards (SAMA’s).

The show concept - something Karen wanted to bring to life for a while now - lays bare her passion for the music that has influenced her since childhood and throughout her life. An intimate unplugged performance, which allows the audience to get up close and personal with this sensational artist, the show will also feature very special guests from the groundbreaking NGO “The Africa Voices Trust.” The Africa Voices Ensemble has previously performed with Josh Groban on his Straight to You tour, and now joins forces with Karen Zoid to make sure the experience is truly unique and unforgettable.

Under the Covers is at Theatre on the Bay from 27 November until 1 December 2012 with tickets tickets from R120 and R150 and bookings at Computicket or via 021 438 3300.
