Maftown Heights Vol 3: Getting to know a bit about KT & Lection

As a build up to the Maftown Heights Vol. 3 event on 30 November 2012, The Maftown Heights platform is doing a daily spotlight feature on the artists on the Maftown Heights line-up. With that in mind, here's a 411 about one of the artists, KT and Lection...

Who is KT?

Having been raised in a very musical family, KT’s talent was noticeable from an early age given his ability to catch on to songs and rap them fluently at 5 years old. It was this that earned him a regular spot in local talent shows.

During high school, KT came together with a friend who had a studio and began recording songs that created a buzz in and around Mmabatho. So much so that it earned him a feature on Morafe’s second album called A e ne: the revelation; and a track called “Ayeye” from JR’s debut album, The main event. In the same year, he recorded “Mogote” for DJ Lemonka’s Hype Award winning The Motswako Tape vol.1.

Soon after finishing high school he began working on his solo project “After School” and has been living up to his name as Kgosi ya di Punchilne, featuring on DJ Lemonka’s second offerringThe Motswako Tape vol.2; his clever metaphors, punch-lines and poise on stage, earning him a spot on the HYPE Magazine’s Top5 Unsigned emcees list.

What does Maftown Heights mean to you?

I’ve been attending Maftown Heights since its inception. At first it struck me as bizarre that Maftown Heights was held in JHB but I’ve come to understand the vision and above everything respect what the brand has done to break bread with/unify/bring together the various hip hop fraternities from across SA. Maftown Heights is undoubtedly the hottest hip hop event of the year.

What don’t people know about KT?

One of the names I go by is profresherKT. Being FRESH is my profession. You might see me with the freshest sneakers, freshest woman & my rhymes "Are more like Debonairs pizza / they free(style) if u don't get them di fisa / & I don't come cheap / that's why I make sure I deliver hot fresh  prepared rhymes & make you pay a fee”.

Who is Lection?

Lection “ born Thebe  Lekhonkhobe in North West Mahikeng is a Motswako artist who doubles as a producer of his material with the assistance  of Thasman Tsotetsi. Lection joined the Motswako rap culture in his early twenties and his musical journey does not only paint a picture of a committed and hard working individual but someone who believes in his talent and is going all out to make it work.

Lection’s skills have made him a force to be reckoned with in the Motswako/Hip Hop industry where he is a major item on the line up of almost every event organizer, club owner and manager. It is not easy to look away when Lection takes center stage; as you listen to the beat that defines this unique artist; the underlining strings that make him the perfect Motswako artist and notice the outstanding live performance that he puts out on stage.

What does Maftown Heights mean to you?

I look at it as a platform with an opportunity for both un-established and established artist(s) to showcase their talent and step up their game on the Maftown Heights stage.

I love how it brings together our Maftown fans to appreciate hip hop in their mother tongue and for the Maftown Motswako heavy weights to share one stage; celebrate and appreciate each other through music in Setswana.

What don’t people know about Lection?

Lection is one multi talented young man; not only is he a skillful Motswako rapper and producer, he is also a graphics designer and a choreographer.
