Featured: Vodacom Durban July Day supporting feature races' entries announced

Every feature contender available has been nominated for the main events at Greyville on Vodacom Durban July Day which will guarantee one of the most spectacular race meetings ever staged in this country.

A total of 153 nominations have been received by Gold Circle for the five supporting features to the R3-million, Grade 1 Vodacom Durban July and there is not a thoroughbred in the country worth his or her salt that is not making a bid for inclusion in the meeting.

Apart from the big race itself, the highlight of the day could see the clash of the brilliant fillies Ebony Flyer, Princess Victoria, Mombasa, Trinity House, Frequent Flyer and Thunder Dance, among others, in the R500 000, Grade 1 Jonsson Workwear Garden Province Stakes over 1 600m.

Ebony Flyer is the highest rated filly having won eight of her 11 starts including the Majorca Stakes and the South African Fillies Sprint in her last two starts while Princess Victoria, with an identical record of eight from 11, showed her brilliance having won the Cape Fillies Guineas, the Poinsettia Stakes and the Tibouchina Stakes in her last five starts.

There have been 32 entries for the R500 000, Grade 1 Golden Horseshoe for juveniles over 1 400m and 22 nominations for the R500 000, Grade 1 Golden Slipper for juvenile fillies over 1 400m and both races are packed with the best two-year-olds in the country.

Potent Power, sensational winner of the Tsogo Sun Medallion, heads the list for the Golden Horseshoe which also includes Gatecrasher Stakes winner Black Toga along with Albert, Indaba My Children, My Jelly Bean and Ottimo.

Among the fillies entered for the Golden Slipper are Allan Robertson Championship winner All Is Secret, The Debutante winner Straight Set that also took on the boys at Scottsville in the Tsogo Sun Medallion and finished second to Potent Power, Counter Ridge, Lizzy Grey, Pirate Girl, Preamble and the brilliant daughter of Var, Valdivia.

There are 28 nominations for the R350 000, Grade 2 Gold Vase over 3 000m including the top Cape stayer Blake that was an impressive winner of the Lonsdale Stirrup Cup and the exciting Irish-bred stayer Gorongosa that has won his last four starts including the Gold Bowl at Turffontein where he beat the field by more than three lengths.

Fifteen of the entries for this race have also been nominated for the R200 000, Grade 3 The 2200, traditionally the “consolation July” that is usually filled mostly by runners that did not make it into Africa’s greatest race.

A massive 47 entries have been received for this 2 200m event which could provide a finish almost as exciting as the big race itself.
