Jubilation as ordinary South African music fan gets once-in-a-lifetime-opportunity to present MTN Record of the Year statuette at MTN SAMA 18 and walk away with R180 000.
Sun City, 29 April 2012 – The 18th annual South African Music Awards will make history tonight when an ordinary lucky South African music fan gets a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to present the MTN Record of the Year for the first time in the history of the awards. Greachen Isaacs of Elsies River in Cape Town has not only won the MTN Feel the Fame competition, but also bags R180 000 courtesy of MTN.
MTN, title sponsor of the MTN SAMAs for the 9th consecutive year, ran the Feel the Fame competition ahead of the awards. Music fans that voted for and downloaded one of the MTN Record of the Year nominated songs stood a chance to feel the fame liveon SABC 1 during the broadcast of the awards by presenting the statuette of one of the most popular awards in the MTN SAMAs to the winning artist.
“I’m so excited,” said an ecstatic Isaacs when her name was announced at a glittering ceremony hosted at the Palace Hotel in Sun City last night. “It is my first time attending the MTN SAMAs or any event of this magnitude and I’m nervous yet overjoyed that I will be walking on the y’ello carpet and will be on-stage with my favourite celebrities and famous musicians. What a great gesture by MTN. It is a moment I will remember for the rest of my life.”
Thulisile Gubudela from Dundee in Kwa-Zulu Natal and Chris Mhlari from Tzaneen in Limpopo were part of the group of finalists hosted VIP style at Sun City. “I feel like a celebrity because it was my first time on a plane and at the MTN SAMAs,”gloated Gubudela. Mhlari adds, “although I didn’t win the main prize I’m still over the moon that I’m at the MTN SAMAs and have enjoyed the VIP treatment thus far. Some people dream to be at this event.”
Serame Taukobong, Chief Marketing Officer at MTN SA, says “as much as the MTN SAMAs are about the musicians who have crafted the best art in their recording studios, the passionate music fans that support our local music industry and our Branddeserve their moment to shine as well. MTN ran the Feel the Fame competition to give back to the communities it operates in, in this case those that support local music. We are delighted that MTN SAMAs 18 will be a memorable event.”
Voting lines are still open for the MTN Record of the Year and will close at 21h30 tomorrow night. The public can vote by sending the code of their favourite artist to 083 123 SAMA (7262).
