Ityala Lamawele is back!

And this time in a threatre production
CAPE TOWN: Renowned theatre practitioners Mandla MbothweThando Doni and Faniswa Yisa present the lauded production of Ityala Lamawele, showing at UCT’s Hiddingh Hall from 20-23 June, supported by the Institute for Creative Arts.

Adapted by Thando Doni, with musical direction by Babalwa Makwetu and directed by Mandla Mbothwe and Thando Doni, Ityala Lamawele is based on the acclaimed isiXhosa novel by Samuel Edward Krune Mqhayi. Performed in isiXhosa, the story is set in the time of the historical King Hintsa kaKhawuta, and concerns a dispute between the fictional twins Wele and Babini over their deceased father’s estate. As they are born on the same day, there is a dispute over who should take their father’s place.

This is resolved via a traditional Xhosa legal trial, held at the court of King Hintsa, who presides over the trial.

The production is a feast of visual and musical storytelling, featuring an all-star cast, which includes: Faniswa Yisa, Chuma Sopotela, Thembekile Komani, Babalwa Makwetu, Nomakrestu Xakathugaga, and many more.

From here, Ityala Lamawele goes to the Makhanda National Arts Festival. The performances at Hiddingh are in aid of getting this incredible production to Makhanda.
