JOBURG THEATRE GIVES WINGS TO CAPTIVE PLAY

The Chaeli Campaign, together with the Joburg Theatre, is proud to bring audiences a phenomenal production, In the Wings.

This coming of age story follows the lives of three women, Jo, Kath (who has cerebral palsy) and their mother, Stacey. The production illustrates how each woman fights a personal battle to work past their limitations to create a future the rest of the world sometimes fails to see.

Written and directed by Jared Kruger, who is the arts and culture program coordinator at the Chaeli Campaign, In the Wings has been described as being ‘touching and relatable’ as well as ‘captive and moving’ by audiences.

The seventeen year old Kath is charmingly portrayed by Danieyela Rodin whose character is based on Chaeli Mycroft. Aside from her physical challenges, Kath, like any other teenager is faced with the arousal of lustful desires and the hope of finding love. At the age of 10, Chaeli Mycroft was the youngest ever finalist in the 2005 Shoprite Checkers / SABC 2 Woman of the Year Awards. She has since been awarded the International Children’s Peace Prize in 2011 and received a medal for Social Activism at the Nobel Laureate Peace Summit in 2012.

In the Wings played at On Broadway, Cape Town in October 2011. The show attracted a great deal of positive feedback from both the public and the media. “The show moved me in a way that not many performances are able to do in the space of an hour” says Jordan Scott, a marketing student.
Dex Goodman of The Arts Mag, said ‘captivating production of note, with the perfect balance of laughter, tears, hope and inspiration that will send you home with a smile and some food for thought.’

The show has a wide audience appeal and is suited to both young audiences and adults alike.

The cast: Bo Petersen (mom); Danieyella Rodin (Kath); Madele Vermaak (Jo) and Jaques de Silva who plays Jay, a young rugby coach who has a romantic interest in Jo.

In the Wings is at the Joburg Theatre (158 Loveday Street, Braanfontein) from 8 – 16 September 2012.
