Springboks' Coach Heyneke Meyer to announce his squad for England Test matches

Titanic Clash at Loftus

Heyneke Meyer
It’s a titanic clash at Loftus this weekend between the Bulls and the Stomers, but all eyes will be on the new Springboks coach, Heyneke Meyer when he announces his squad for the next month England Test matches. Rumours are already making rounds that Fourie du Preez will be named in a 32 man group, not only that he will be named but he will be a captain too.

But before we can go far, how are South African franchised performances in Super 15 impact the Boks. One can easily say it’s a mixture of bad and good, since teams like Bulls, Stomers and Sharks are doing good while the cheetahs and Lions are being bullied all round. So this means the Boks can’t rely on Super 15 but they will have to solder on themselves.

A lot has happened to the team after the World Cup failure in New Zealand. New coach is in place now and a new captain and vice has to be named following Smit and Matfield retirement post World Cup.

So yes, it’s a tough job for Meyer and his technical team, but it doesn’t need a sprint but a marathon since the next bigger picture is in England 2015 World Cup, time is on our side. But how do they go about it?

Rumours are that du Preez will be named captain, and personally I don’t think that is the right way. Firstly he won’t be around in 2015 and he is now playing his trade in Japan, which means he is no longer exposed into tough Super Rugby. So why don’t we groom a young potential captain to lead the team through? Meyer said “…but I will not commit to a captain for the next four years…” Why not now coach? Why waiting than grooming for next four years? What good reason(s) for that? Is this a sign that a new captain will be taken to the World cup?

Once questions arise more than answers, then you must know problems are beckoning. As Billy Ocean sang: when going gets tough, the tough get going! Unfortunately we are the creators of that tough at times.
