Xtra Sport: Santos has to fight relegation or else they will sing “Loliwe” on their way to national first division

WHO WILL BE OUR OWN LIONEL MESSI?

It’s evident that our local teams need a pool of goals for them to achieve their goals. Strikers who have been hired to score goals know the kind of pressure they are facing, all they need to do is to follow their job card. The big question is who will be the leading goal scorer of the 2011/2012 season?  The pressure is on; the fans are talking about it in all corners of the country. Coaches want to add something to their profiles, but all depends on the players particularly strikers. Who will be the South African Lionel Messi?

Free State stars striker Edward Manqele has rose to the occasion though he was not counted on the list of suspect who could teach others how it’s done in the 18 area. He has just been nominated as the player of the month. He has eleven goals so far, with the stunning performance that Stars have displayed he can still add to the tally. Pitso Mosimane’s best striker, Katlego Mphela should have been in front in the list. He had the best chances to increase his goals but he wasted them. If he don’t improve on using opportunities he get that might delay his way to overseas where he want to be.

Free State Stars Striker: Edward Manqele
Mphela have the potential to continue where he left last season, only if he could understand that playing as a team lead to championship than striving for man of the match. The former Orlando Pirates  and Kaizer Chiefs veteran, Siyabonga “Bhele “ Nomvete is getting younger on the pitch as he still have his pace and skills. His eye-catching performance has put pressure on Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane as many fans suggest Mosimane calls him to assist in the national team.

Bhele has scored 10 goals this season. He always led by example. In an interview with kick-off last year he was quoted saying he enjoys having his laptop with him. I assume if he is not playing Solitaire in that laptop then he h is playing Fifa computer games where he might be getting the inspiration. Can he be our local Lionel Messi come end of the season?

The return of the all-time goal scorer of Bafana Bafana Benni McCarthy to the local league was a big surprise.  Because of his profile many expected him to make his presence felt by maintaining his scoring magic. Instead McCarthy has scored only eight goals. He just told the sport reporters that his focus is on winning the league with the team than his individual glory. Benni is not a player one can expect to be the leading striker on the list come the end of the season.  He has been very generous on giving others an opportunity to score.

Bernard Parker was expected to take his career to the next level and that would lead to him being called overseas again, but he hasn’t been that sharp in the 18 area. However Lehlohonolo Majoro is pressing harder in trying to help Amakhosi to win the league race. He has scored 8 goals. Yes he is trying but is that enough to help the team to win this race? You know the answers Amakhosi need goals.

Santos striker Eleazar Rogers has not remained behind. He has nine goals this season.  By the look of things any of these players can still score and be on top. Rogers’s magic will have come out. Santos has to fight relegation or else they will sing “Loliwe” on their way to national first division.

Scoring goals is still a major challenge in South Africa, being on top with eleven goals is not enough to a country that will be hosting the Africa cup of nation next year. However we must also applaud the young local players who are on the top five of leading goal scorer. It is promising that tomorrow we will have our own Lionel Messi.
