JOHANNESBURG: On Thursday night the South African Police Service (SAPS) arrested 35 wanted suspects in the Westrand area, in connection with crime ranging from murder, car hijacking, theft of motor vehicle, house robberies and dealing in drugs.
The successful arrests of the suspects happened late last night (Thursday), June 20, 2019 at about 22:00 (CAT) during an intelligence driven operation conducted by SAPS.
Meanwhile during operation O Kae Molao, police in Bekkersdal arrested 109 suspects. Among those arrested, 33 were illegal immigrants. During the operations 44 cell phones and gold dust were confiscated. Two cars were impounded, two firearms were recovered and two illegal liquor outlets were closed.
SAPS also confirmed that Benoni police arrested six illegal miners.
"The suspects were found with equipment used for illegal mining and police also recovered 410kg copper cables suspected to be stolen. The arrested suspects will appear in Westonaria and Benoni Magistrate's Courts on Monday, 24 June 2019," reads a statement issued by SAPS.
