JOHANNESBURG: A bomb blast
hit a tourist bus near Egypt’s famed Giza Pyramids on Sunday, wounding tourists
including South Africans. According to reports, the roadside bomb went off as
the bus was being driven in Giza, also injuring civilians in a nearby car.
According to
reports by BBC, 17 people were injured including three South Africans, no fatalities
were recorded.
South Africa
said in a statement that the bus explosion affected 28 of its citizens who were
part of the tourist group.
The injured
would remain in hospital where they are being treated for minor injuries while
the rest returned home on Monday morning, said the statement from the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco).
This incident
comes after three Vietnamese holidaymakers and their Egyptian guide were killed
when a roadside bomb hit their bus as it traveled near the Giza Pyramids
outside Cairo in December.
Egypt has been
battling an insurgency that surged especially in the turbulent North Sinai
region following the 2013 military ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi,
who was replaced by former army general Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
Some 650
militants and around 45 soldiers have been killed since the start of the
offensive, according to separate statements by the armed forces.
These incidents
come as a blow to Egyptian authorities and tourism as the country prepares itself
to host the much anticipated Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament next
month.
