Audi South Africa has decided to present South African Olympic star Wayde van Niekerk with an Audi R8 as his sponsored vehicle, reports Carmag.
The 24-year-old was named as an Audi Sport Ambassador in July 2016, winning use of an RS3 Sportback as his official vehicle for a year. However, after his record-breaking antics in Rio, Audi SA saw fit to upgrade the sprinter’s ride. His new car? An Audi R8 V10 Plus worth more than R3-million.

“Audi South Africa is extremely proud to represent Wayde as an official Audi Sport Ambassador,” said Paul Sansom, head of Audi SA.
“We thought there was no better way to welcome him home than to surprise him with the all new Audi R8 as his new vehicle following his stellar performance at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
“We look forward to being a long-term partner to him as his bright future progresses and supporting him as he continues to proudly represent South Africa both on and off the athletics track,” added Sansom.
The new R8 V10 Plus under his custodianship is the most powerful production Audi ever built. The mid-mounted 5,2-litre V10 makes 449 kW and allows a 0-100 km/h sprint of just 3,2 seconds.
Audi SA made sure to emphasise that the 24-year-old will be “treated to an exclusive driver training session with a qualified Audi Sport Specialist instructor to ensure that he is fully equipped to safely drive the vehicle”.
