Do Agric, It Pays!
Campaign, an initiative pioneered by ONE.org to raise awareness about
the transformative role that agriculture can play in growing the
African economy – despite the fact
that 70% of Africans are dependent on agriculture for their livelihood,
productivity in this sector has been at a standstill since 1961. As
Africans, we are no longer feeding ourselves.
The
campaign is inspired by the fact that in 2003 at the AU Summit, African
leaders agreed to dedicate a minimum of 10% of their budgets to
developing agriculture. To date, only 8 have kept to that promise. The Do Agric, it Pays! campaign
is about holding governments to that promise, while awakening youth to
the fact that agriculture is a viable business sector to enter.
To send
the message out, over 20 artists from across Africa recorded a track
and video 'Cocoa na Chocolate' (Cocoa becomes Chocolate) to reach youth audiences and amplify the message. The artists include Nigeria's Femi Kuti and D'Banj, South Africa's Judith Sephuma and Vusi Nova, DRC's Fally Ipupa, amongst others.
