“By far the best ever
spell of bowling I have ever seen in a long time” that was the words by
Pakistan coach Davenell Frederick Whatmore,
following their overwhelming defeat by highflying South Africa by 211
runs with the day to spare. South Africa
has now taken a 1-0 lead in the 3 match test series, with matches in Newlands
and Centurion to follow on the 14 and 22 of February.
Graeme Smith playing on his 100 Test match as a captain won
the toss on a green pitch at the Wanderers and elected to bat, brave decision
to bat first. The Proteas could only manage 253 all out. Pakistan’s reply never
kicked-on, thanks to imperative Dale Steyn as they were cleaned out for 49,
giving the host a first inning lead of over 200 runs.
South Africa declared their second innings on 275-3, setting
the visitors a mammoth total of 480 to win-which was going to be a world
record. The visitors did put on a much better performance in their second
innings, they managed 268 all out, giving the host a 211 run victory and their
unbeaten run continues-now it stands at 13 matches.
Dale Steyn was
named Man of The Match, for his match
impressive figures of 11 for 60. He is now holding the record for most 10 and 5
wicket(s) hauls for South Africa, he has now 5 10-wickets hauls and 21
5-wickets hauls. No wonder he is the world number one. AB de Villiers also grabbed himself a world record, by becoming the
first ever cricket player in a first class cricket to score a century (103*)
and take 11 catches in a match.
Smith played in
his 100 match a captain and in the next match in Cape Town he will be playing his 100 match as South African team
captain. He took over the duties at just 22 years old. We can hope this fairy-tale
continues.
The next match is in the Cape Town on the 22 February.
