Soul Singer Choko Launches Her Much Anticipated Debut Album

After many years of causing waves in all the right ways, one of South Africa’s rising stars “Choko” aka Boichoko Qwabe is finally ready to step into the spotlight.  She rendered an unforgettable performance when she made her first national appearance on the SABC 2 show Gospel Times in 2005, and after years of honing her craft, Choko is finally ready to release her much anticipated debut album.

Set for the 2nd of November at The Promusica Theatre in Roodeport, CHOKO LIVE promises to be the sultry singer’s official introduction into the world of music. Supported by music heavyweights such as Kwela Tebza and Howza, Choko is thrilled to finally share her music which she has been working on for a couple of years.

Of her long awaited album, Choko is quick to note that her music is hard even for her to categorize as she went into the creative process of conceiving the album free from restrictions to a specific genre. “I draw my inspiration from a lot of experiences, and they all come with different emotions, lessons and eventually direct my story telling”, she enthused.

Born in Bloemfontein and bred in Kroonstad, like so many greats before her, Choko started her musical journey at church; a background that in so many ways explains the soulful influence in her debut album.

“The album is the sound of joy, of love and of a young girl who has now come into her own. My songs are fun, playful and soul touching.” She affirmed.

The album which features personal songs such as “Baile”, a heart stirring song Choko wrote in memory of her late grandfather, is mostly waxed with Sesotho lyrics, celebrating Choko’s mother tongue and rich heritage.  Other strong contenders in the album include “Kerobegile” and “Uzenzile”, songs that deal with strong themes of addressing issues of responsibility and making choices that eventually have a great impact in one’s life. For those with happy feet, the album also boasts a couple of happy easy dance songs such as “Make me happy” and “Lerato”

More than sharing her talent, CHOKO LIVE is an evening dually dedicated to raising funds to support one of the causes close to Choko’s heart; “The Book Cover Initiative”, a project Choko initiated to address the lack of educational stationery for children from impoverished backgrounds. “This might look small but I know that there are lots of learners out there who cannot afford to get their books covered. I have seen how that affects their confidence, especially when some teachers make it worse by always mourning about it and writing funny notes on their books” Choko asserted.

Proceeds from the evening will go towards the purchasing of book covers for students across South Africa for the 2013 School Year period.
