Countdown to Maftown Heights: Getting to know Thasman

As a build up to the Maftown Heights Vol. 3 event on 30 November 2012, The Maftown Heights platform is doing a daily spotlight feature on the artists on the Maftown Heights line-up. With that in mind, here's a 411 about one of the artists, Thasman...

Who is Thasman?

Thabiso “Thaso” Tsotetsi started making music in his flat in the early 90s has grown to become one of the most respected and talented producers in the South African music landscape.

After teaching himself the ins and outs of music production, Thaso moved to Cape Town and was offered a job at Mother Mix Record Label as an assistant producer. He later moved back to Mabatho where he composed more music and was later spotted by Beat Makers in Johannesburg.

It all started to look bright in 2000 when he joined Ghetto Ruff and started working with the likes of Metswako and Morafe, in which TowdeeMac (Morafe) gained his production skills under Thaso’s wing. He relocated to Johannesburg with the music he had been producing and through those projects he got to produce the Gaz’lam soundtrack and jot music for the prominent Kwaito star, Zola -Bhambatha which was released in 2004 and won Artist of The Year award at the 2005 South African Music Awards (SAMAs).

What does Maftown Heights mean to you?

Maftown Heights creates opportunities for us the elite in the Motswako movement and for the up and coming Motswako pioneers to share the same stage while fulfilling what we always dreamt about which is making vernacular rap commercially viable, predominantly Tswana Rap.

"MotswakoMaftown Heights is an event and or a platform that not only embraces Motswako and the artists behind it, but gives the public an experience they've always asked for which is to have most of their favorite Motswako artists under 1 roof, having their best music playing all night long and performed.

What don’t people know about Thasman?

I'm a biker and a bit of an adrenaline junky. Something that takes me away from my music. Silence is mostly bliss in my space, I like my quiet space. I have a love for film so I spend my free time on shooting and editing film or videos.
